I was having an audiobook hangover after listening to I miss you when I blink. I tried listening to about 4 books and I just couldn’t get into any of them. Then I found Queenie and was hooked! It is a great audio book.

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Synopsis: Queenie is a 25-year-old black woman from Jamaica living in London, her life is kind of a mess. She broke up with her boyfriend and tries to find comfort in all the wrong places. This story covers the highs and lows she goes through as she tries to pick her life back up.

Review: I went into this book not knowing what to expect. I didn’t even read the synopsis. I think some people would need to be warned that there are some topics discussed in this book that may not be for everyone and it is very explicit.

This book took me to a world I didn’t know. Queenie is a complex character, unique, and funny. I found myself really rooting for her. I loved the “Corgies” group chat she had with her friends. It was so real and a great way for the reader to learn more about her and the support she got from her friends. They were really funny, and it resonated with me.

This story touches the topics of mental health, how different cultures view mental health, dating, family, friendships and race. The reason I’m not giving it a higher rating is because I felt like something was missing, maybe some of the topics covered weren’t explored as much as I wished.

I really liked the audiobook narrator, she has a great accent and does a great job with the various voices. I recommend this on audio.
