I have read the entirety of Queenie last year. I really love to read books that are set in or about the United Kingdom. I was so excited to read a book set in South London. A British-Jamaican at that! Awesome. I am so glad that I had the chance to read it. It's not my typical genre, I will admit. I liked the modernity of the story. The main character is flawed and that's fine! It's good that nowadays, authors are not afraid to write their main characters as having problems, especially young characters or characters that are not villans. I think one of the strengths of this book was its relevance and how a lot of the situations Queenie goes through (even though some are self-imposed) may resonate with readers. They are sort of based on universal feelings and experiences (some) about how to deal with yourself, break-ups, work stuff, mental health, self-esteem, etc.

I think my only critique was the text messages with friends and the interpersonal relationships. They were kind of annoying. I think that has to do more with me than anything maybe. I did love the slang use. I am glad to see this sort of thing in publications. I hope that the author writes more.
