⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️— Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams (Out March 19)

Thank you to the publisher and Bookish first for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Queenie is on a downward spiral. Her boyfriend has broken up with her. Her job is heading in the wrong direction. And she continuously is seeking solace in the wrong guys. Will Queenie work herself out of this funk or will she have to hit rock bottom?

What I loved: Queenie herself. Did I get frustrated with Queenie? YES! But she is a mid-20 year old making bad choices. My early 20s were nothing to write home about. I loved Queenie’s friends- “the corgis”. The texting conversations made me smile and reminded me of group chats every set of girlfriends have. Lastly, I enjoyed Queenie’s family. Her grandparents made me laugh and smile.

What I did not love: The writing style. The flashbacks were random and sometimes broke up the flow of the storyline happening at the moment. I would have to ask myself what just happened. I thought it was just me, but some other reviews also mentioned the multitude of issues the author tried to cram into the book. Focusing on Queenie’s upbringing and how she was raised in her culture and how mental health issues are viewed. But the author proceeded to add in black lives matter plot line, but highly under developed and every guy Queenie dated was racist in some way— constantly mentioning her skin color. While I think ALL of these issues should be mentioned, the jumping into all of the different categories made the plot plateau at times.

I personally enjoyed Queenie and would love to see others’ feelings and thoughts. I also would continue to read books by this author because she did write a great character. Just too many sub plots.
