I knew 1% into this book that I was going to love it. It was a smart choice of the author to start off with such an intense scene because it really prepares you for the content of the book. Queenie is a 26 year old woman who just went through back to back traumatic events. She unhealthily copes with this situation by becoming hypersexual. She sleeps around with many men and has very rough and dangerous sex. One of the things I liked about this book is the discussion about it can be common for women to cope with trauma by becoming hypersexual. It isn't discussed enough and still has a lot of stigma around it. Besides that, the book also heavily discusses racism. There is a lot of instances of covert racism in this book that are mainly done by white men. The book also talks about how people, especially white men, fetishizes Black woman's bodies. This is a heavy book but an important one.
