Wow. It's been awhile since I read a book and this quickly felt this level of realness to a character. A good author subtly brings a character to life and Candice Carty Williams makes Queenie feel real, and like someone you know from work or down the street. Queenie is having problems with her boyfriend and then gets even more distressing news while having a doctor's appointment. So basically life is in the tanks, and yet she seems funny, grounded, and real. I'm sure part of the storyline focuses on the fact that Queenie is black and her boyfriend is white but I can't help but focus on who she is on the inside because she's written so well.
