This incredibly moving memoir details author Broome’s coming of age as a gay, Black man in small town Ohio. It’s written as a series of shorter essays that are stitched together with scenes from a bus ride, reminding Broome of different parts of his life growing up. Stories from his young life center around living up to expectations of masculinity, and especially Black masculinity. I was especially drawn to his complex relationships with his parents - his struggles to live his own life authentically while not disappointing his family. When I first read the first look here on BookishFirst, I knew this story was one I had to read. The cover is beautiful, immediately drew me in, and I’m so thankful that Broome shared his stories with us. He is a wonderfully talented writer, and his authentic and honest storytelling has me examining many layers of privilege in my own life.
