I won this book in a BookishFirst raffle a few months ago. It took me so long to read it because I’m not a big memoir fan, and to be honest, I hate this cover. It did not make me want to read it. But given the publishing date was nearing closer, I reluctantly picked it up.

And boy was I surprised! I didn’t know what to expect, but what I got was a riveting, brutally honest and deeply personal memoir about growing up as a gay Black male and what that means in Black culture. Being a white female, I learned so much more about perceptions of being Black and how being gay can add to the difficulty of existing in a white dominated American society.

I believe that given the state of our country today, and with the Black Lives Matter movement, it is especially important for memoirs and books regarding this subject should be read.

This is a novel that should not be skipped over!
