The book unexpectedly begins in a bar with a young black man being stereotyped by a young French man - both have lies to tell. This kind of storytelling, though not as monumental to the plot as Fairfax Rochester, for instance, still gets the story off in an awkward direction.
Also, lots of stereotyping on both sides will hopefully find better balance.
