Good but Forgettable

I was extremely excited about this book which is likely why my expectations were too high. A Rapunzel retelling sounded delightful but it fell short in many ways. I had a hard time relating or caring about the characters because character progression was stilted or non-existent. For example, our antagonist love interest Nox is egotistical and hates witches. Just a few chapters later his internal dialogue is that of a completely different person. I understand people change but not that fast and not that smoothly. Other than that, the plot felt ripped from a hundred other YA fantasies with nothing to distinguish itself differently. The cast of characters, magic system, and point of everything was forgettable at best. By the end I didn’t even care who lived or died, I just wanted it to be over. I will say the first 100 pages was VERY strong, it was the last few hundred that took a nose dive.
