This book is set in a kingdom made up of 6 islands that once held magic and solidarity. It is now ruled by a power hungry king who wants control of all the people, islands and magic. The kingdom holds a festival inviting people to bet thier soul for the chance of a wish, if they are able to escape death. If they fail the king & the one remaining witch take the soul of the failed in order to sustain the kings immortality.
The hier to the witch's power has a good heart and has empathy for the people who take this bet. She teams up with one of the kings solders to try to end the king and his reign over the Six Isles. Thier quest takes them across the kingdom to the only island that has been able to hold the king's advances at bay. There they discover that there is still magic left on the island and that Solestra, the witch's hier is the key to breaking the kings reign and freeing the people to live in solidarity & happiness again.
I really related to the soul searching Solestra had to do to become her own person and not just who she was told to be. The love story between her and Nox (the solder) was sweet as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
