Upon seeing the cover, I was immediately curious what this book was about. The synopsis' mention of it being a Rapunzel-inspired fantasy romance further lured me in.

The First Impression sample of PRINCESS OF SOULS did not disappoint. There’s just something about a book that begins with a map. It’s as if you know you’re guaranteed to be transported into another world.

“I can tell someone when they’re going to die. All I need is a lock of hair and their soul.”

Selestra is waiting to turn 18 years-old so she can be trained as a Somniatis witch and bound to the King by a blood oath. She spends her days locked away, only permitted to come out during the Festival of Predictions where she assists by cutting locks of hair from people who will likely die so that their souls can be snatched for the King to feed on for his immortality. People participate in the festival even though there is risk of death because they are given a prediction and those who survive are granted a wish.

“This bargain may kill you or bring you unrivaled glory.”

“Sometimes, the riskiest things reap the greatest rewards.”

After Nox, a soldier, arrives as the last person to be accepted into the festival, the King instructs Selestra to give him his prediction. What she sees when she touches him is shocking. I was not expecting her to see both his death and also her own. The sample First Impression ends right there…such a cliff-hanger. I can’t wait to find out what happens.

I’m curious who it was that she touched prior to Nox that didn’t go well. Will she get a prediction anytime to touches someone? Is that why she is kept secluded?

I like how the book alternates chapters for dual POV between Selestra and Nox. We get to experience both characters’ perspectives. I find the characters interesting so far and look forward to seeing how they develop as well as the world building. I’ve enjoyed the writing style and think this will be a great fantasy read. I’m assuming that the romance aspect will be between Selestra and Nox which is bound to have a lot of conflict given that they are both fated to die. How can they get out of that? Can they unlink their fates?

This is 100% a must-read for me. I have to know the rest of the story!
