In the first three chapters, you definitely go through a whole spectrum of feels - you feel the protagonist's heartbreak and confusion, her grief and mourning process, her changing family dynamics in a new blended family, the complications of love, relationships and sex. There's a lot happening, but the writing and ideas are pretty squarely YA. I am curious to see how Jo changes and grows over the rest of the book because there's definitely potential for this story to leave the reader feeling empowered. As the editor notes in her note, "practice girl" is an ugly term and its existence is awful.
