Apparently, Halloween in the Bronx is no picnic in the park. In this one-chapter prologue, set 10 years before the actual story begins, six near-adult friends are trolling around on a haunted tour including Sarah and her boyfriend Tyler. Somewhat reluctantly, Sarah is charged with keeping an eye on her older cousin Davey, who has Down syndrome. Davey isn't thrilled with the scary places, but he outright refuses to enter one of them, claiming his father just told him it was evil. The problem? Davey's dad died more than a year ago. Sarah is upset, but caves in and stays with Davey while the others - including Tyler - head inside. My first impression from reading this short chapter and the official description is that something terrible happens that night that comes back to haunt Sarah - and I wonder what it was. My second impression is that I'm afraid the rest of the book relies on using flashback chapters to build the story - a technique that can be highly effective but of which I've grown very, very, very tired.
