When I read Kate Alice Marshall's Rules For Vanishing, I became totally enamored by YA horror, which has carried on to this day. Between the clever usage of multimedia to draw the reader's attention to different characters, interpretations, and even sensory input, it made the (rather unbelievable) plot feel a bit more immediate.

Our Last Echoes is considerably more grounded than Rules for Vanishing, even though the two stories are set in the same world and even share a common side character in Abby. One of my favorite differences here was that the "weird" and "spooky" went beyond just a location, instead infecting our main character and following her even outside of what one might consider the logical boundaries of the phenomenon.

As always, Marshall writes a compelling character in the center of a cast that doesn't just feel like filler, and the tension in this one was thicker than the ubiquitous island fog.
