The plot/premise for this book sounded fascinating and is what drew me in. The story is gripping and held my attention from the first chapter.

You quickly start to realize that not everything on Bitter Rock is as it seems. People are disappearing without a trace and no one seems to think much of it. Sophia is drawn to the Island after receiving a mysterious call, from someone named Abby, who hints that Sophia's mother may still be alive. Once she arrives on the island, things start to change.

Overall, I enjoyed Sophia as a main character and enjoyed learning why she had some of her little quirks. It was also interesting to see how all of the characters connected in one way or another.

The whole book has a haunting feel to it. The writing is very accessible and allows for a quick read. I had to get used to the back and forth time lines, but it was laid out well enough in that is was easy to follow. It also uses a mixed media format to tell the story (interviews, video recordings, emails, and first person narrative) that really keeps you engaged.

This book is marketed as Kara Thomas meets Twin Peeks, and having no knowledge of either, I wasn't sure what I was getting into.

My reason for the 3.75 star rating instead of 5 stars is because I only started to feel a connection to the characters in the last 100 pages of the book and I was able to predict the ending of the story. I would also have loved for the some parts of the supernatural elements to be a little more fleshed out.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a gripping and fast paced read.
