In the writing style much like author T. Kingfisher, the reader is brought into a fantasy world where things are not as they seem and people have been vanishing without a trace for the last 30 years off the island of Bitter Rock, Alaska. Eighteen year old Sophia sneeks her way into working for LARC, a place that studies birds called terns, but she has bigger intentions of finding out what happened to her mother all those years ago when she receives a tip from a girl named Abby, who lost her sister at the same time and the same place. Between Sophia, Abby, and the boss' son Liam they venture out to find answers. What they discover are creatures called echoes who mimick the looks and personalites of the people they see on the island, although most echoes are evil, Sophia discovers she has an echo from when she was on the island with her mother as a child and that she makes a great ally/helper. The ending does get a little confusing, but it leaves the reader wanting to know more. There was plenty of gory scenes and scary moments for those of us who love a good horror story and I finished this book greedily within one weekend. Thank you for a fun, thrilling read. This was from BookishFirst for an honest review, and these thoughts on the book are truly my own.
