Another first read from a new author for me. Not that KAM is new because she isn’t, she just happens to be new to me and this is her first novel I’ve entered into. I didn’t realize when I picked this book up that it was YA. It doesn’t strike me as one aside from the MCs being 17/18 ish. There’s no ridiculous language used or weird tropes. They could have been full fledged adults with they way they were written. That’s not a complaint. They were all likable and I thoroughly felt connected to them. The reactions for the things happening in the book were on point and realistic and I couldn’t help but feel like Abby and Sophia belonged in a Supernatural episode. Again, not a complaint. Loved the dialogue, the characters, the setting and the pacing. The format of using “evidence” was interesting too and definitely added to the story. Now as for the story itself, it was wonderfully written. The flow was good and the story unfolded with a current timeline and past. It never seems far fetched either which is necessary for a book that’s working with “extra natural” elements. I originally rated this book a 4 because it is solid however it starts off slow. I bumped the rating up to a 4.5 because it’s like Silent Hill on crack. And lastly it sits at a 5 because it’s been a long time since a book made me uncomfortable with the dark. This one was fine while reading it but I stood up about 3/4 of the way through and had the lights off, I instantly got weirded out as I reviewed some of the storyline in my head. Like I said, it’s been a while since a book has had that effect on me. Solid and I’ll be ordering more of her catalog. I need to find out what happened to Abby!!
