I have been trying to read more horror lately, and I am glad to have read Kate Alice Marshall's Our Last Echoes. A few weeks before I started reading Our Last Echoes, I read the Kirkus Review for the book and learned that Our Last Echoes is connected to one of Kate Alice Marshall's other books, Rules For Vanishing. I have not yet read Rules for Vanishing, and I probably should have read it before Our Last Echoes, because there were quite a few references in this book that I did not understand. Fortunately, it wasn't too disorienting.
Something I really love about Our Last Echoes is its mixed-media format. In addition to Sophia's narration, there are interview transcripts, video transcripts, and emails between two characters (though this only occurs once). Also, sentence fragments are used sparingly in this book, which I appreciate. I absolutely hate when every other sentence in a book is a fragment. I know this is a stylistic choice, but I find it makes the story feel stunted. When used correctly, sentence fragments can help convey a sense of urgency.
Overall, I enjoyed Our Last Echoes and would definitely read another book by Kate Alice Marshall.
