Almost makes me miss high school

In high school, I had this one friend who would stop by my parents' house unannounced to ask my mom "can Moose come out to play?" As if to intentionally brush aside the mounting pressure to forego childish pursuits in favor of Coolness. I forgot how liberating that was: to have an accomplice - an enabler, even - in embracing my whole self.

Coming-of-age stories often leave me feeling the echoes of the discomfort I felt at that age. But this cast of characters reminds me of the joyful parts: the friends who went through it with me. I eagerly await this novel's release so that I can rejoin Ophelia and her crew at their bench for lunch, for prom, and the moments in between.
