Open Heart reminded me of the many times we want to be what our parents want us to be and the struggle that comes with that burden throughout life. I loved the main character, Gene. His moral dilemmas, his romantic thoughts - everything made for such a well rounded character. I enjoyed the time jumps in the chapters and liked that each chapter was specific to that time (instead of jumping throughout the chapter which confuses me sometimes).
I also liked the medical setting and other characters - especially Sandra. I won't give away any spoilers but I was surprised with her character arc.
Open Heart was an amazing glimpse into the medical field and the world of cardiac surgery. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys medical novels, strong characters and personal/moral struggles. It's just like Gene says in a letter he writes - he cares too much to be a doctor.
