I gave this book 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed this coming of age tale about Gene and I was very intrigued and drawn in by learning a bit more about the medical world. I found some of those areas fascinating which surprised me since I wasn't really sure how I would like the in depth knowledge of medical procedures but they drew me in. I also enjoyed the banter during the medical scenes.

I really enjoyed that this book took place in the 1970s and found his relationship with Patty to be a high point of the book. These characters felt very real and the struggles that Gene faced made him all that more compelling. The summer he spent at his father's hospital in the heart room reminded him of his time with his father before his untimely death and there were many emotions present in this book.

I was sad to hear that the author had passed because I was looking forward to reading more of his work.
