I liked this story. Gene Hull was a really good character to read about. The story was well written and the characters were likable. Throughout the story you found out about Gene's life and got to go along with him while he navigated his life. He was both a fruit tree painter in Florida and a doctor in the Heart Room in Florida.
The book was good and I understand that the author actually painted fruit trees and was an anesthesiologist so he had his real background to use. In the book it stated that he died in 2020. I hate that any reviews like this one he'll never get to read which is a shame.
I only gave the book 4 stars because there are several scenes where he talks about Gene being in the heart room, which is what they call the O R where heart surgery is done. In those sections I found it difficult to read because he explained exactly what was happening to the patient and described the surgery. I'm a little squeamish so I had to skim a scene or two because of that. So if you're squeamish as well prepare yourself.
