Open Heart could be good, but the abrupt changes in time across the first three chapters are kind of confusing and disrupt the continuity of the story. It's hard to tell from the beginning if the story is supposed to be about Gene following in the footsteps of his father or falling in love. Hopefully the story ties these things together as it goes along.
