I feel as if we are in a renaissance for supernatural literature featuring sapphic couples (see: The Invocations, Hearts Still Beating, etc.). This is no exception, but it adds a beautiful element: magical realism.

From the descriptions of the Florida heat (side note: mysteries always hit different when they are in a rural area) to the voyeurism of true crime fans, this feels all too real, right down to the restaurants capitalizing on tourism over dead girls. It is almost pointed at us readers, as we too are reading this murder mystery expecting the grisly details. The supernatural side comes in the form of Tru's cosmic connection to Bailey, both with Tru acting as Bailey and with Tru being pulled into the deep waters by Bailey. I want to see more of Rio - is she cosmically connected to Celeste? Will this connection be explained? Perhaps I am wanting some more realism to the magical realism, and I want to read and find out.
