Tru’s obsession with a pair of dead girls is almost as great as her passion for diving. The two intertwine, feeding off each other in these early chapters, until you wonder just what it is Tru is searching for in the water. Does she have a death wish or is she simply curious?

The fate of two murdered girls is very much on people’s minds, even 20 years after their murders. Perhaps that explains her own curiosity. The mayor is certain the killer will be found. But two decades is a long time to hold on to hope, especially in a small-town atmosphere like this. The killer must be someone that everyone knows—but who could it be? The frisson of nervousness when people glance at each other is almost humorous.

The chapters end with Tru meeting a very pretty girl who surprises the reader with a cryptic statement. I seems that Tru’s made a new friend—or has she? Rio’s unexpected appearance on the heels of a terrifying encounter in the water seems suspect. So we’re immediately asking questions.

Who is Rio? What does she want with Tru? Is Tru suffering hallucinations when she starts hearing voices or is something more sinister happening? The juxtaposition of small-town, brightly lit humidity and the chill of the supernatural is subtle but creeping. It’s an effective supernatural beginning to this YA novel.
