On the night of the winter solstice, an injured man makes his way to the Swan Inn from the river, holding a little girl who appears to be dead. No one knows where they came from, or how the girl miraculously comes back to life. Two families whose girls have disappeared believe the girl is theirs, but no one knows for sure. Over the course of a year, the townspeople will work together to figure out who the girl is, and as they do, a sinister plot will come to light that explains the strange things that have been occurring for almost three years. The river holds many secrets, but if you pay attention, you may find that it also holds many answers...
This is one of the most unique and complicated books I have read in awhile. I enjoyed this book because of the complex characters, the realistic descriptions, and the intricate plot, as well as the compelling lessons about life and relationships. There are many characters, so sometimes it is hard to keep everyone straight, and I could see how it would be easy to get confused if you don't pay close attention to everything going on. I didn't agree with some of the views expressed by the characters and some of the events made me uncomfortable (such as the many instances of domestic violence), but overall the book was suspenseful, surprising, and heartfelt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys realistic stories with a touch of the supernatural.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley's Bookish First program. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
