Confusing Lyrical Writing with a Buried Story

I'm honestly not totally sure what I just read. There were some very beautifully written passages, but the story meanders so much that it's difficult to keep track of. Mostly I was confused and bored, but I can see how there's a wonderful story buried in here. If you enjoy slow paced, lyrical writing this might be an enjoyable read for you, but it was not the book for me. I may have enjoyed it more if I read it as a physical book rather than an audiobook, but based on my previous history with Diane Setterfield's work, I think she's just not the author for me. I loved the magical realism and the historical setting, but I just felt like it was always nighttime in this book. Not that the book literally took place at night (although much of the story does involve people creeping around), but that as I read, my imagining was always shrouded and I never could see quite clearly what was going on which made for a very frustrating experience.
