Mentioning storytelling is what kept me interested in reading the excerpt. Whether the stories are true or they are just stories handed down from generation to generation, I still enjoy reading and hearing them.
The book begins with a young lady falling in love with a young man who tells stories and is accepted by her family because his storytelling brings more business to her family's inn. They marry and have 12 daughters, all looking like their mother. And years later and when they least expect it, she becomes pregnant and bears their only son Jonathan.
Fifteen years go by and storytelling continues in the area. Even though Jonathan desires to tell stories, he has yet to tell his first story.
A body of a young girl is found, and it appears that she has drowned. Jonathan's mother looks at the girl and announces that there in nothing anyone can do to bring this girl "back to life." Jonathan is heartbroken.
A storyteller tells Jonathan that he heard a story about a girl who had been dead for a hundred years but was awoken by a kiss. With hope, Jonathan kisses the young girl but she still appears to have passed on. Leaving the room and locking the door behind him, Jonathan sulks away.
What a cliff hanger!!!
