Sounds like a curious fairy-tale plot. The opening of the book definitely has a storybook quality. I'm not sure if there's supposed to be taking place in a particular era, but it's definitely Ye Olden Days. OK, they refer to 1387 being exactly 500 years ago, so this is 1887--obviously, a time of myth and magic!....
