I love stories and especially oral storytelling. Diane Setterfield begins this story about the backdrop of the inns in the area and how The Swan is a place to hear a good story. Margot, Joe and Jonathan are the innkeepers and just as Joe is about to start a story, strangers burst into the inn.

While the strange man smells of the bitter river, the little girl he was carrying seems to be dead. So Margot directs Jonathan and another man to take her to the long room.

Jonathan leaves her locked in the room and before leaving gives her a kiss hoping it will wake her. I know from the summary she is alive but who is she.

This is a story I'd love to hear how it ends!
