Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood, there's been numerous adaptations and re-tellings over the years, but this one managed to come across fresh and new. Nottingham is much more than a story about a charming rogue who steals from the rich to give to the poor, and the beautiful maiden and band of merry men who fight alongside with him against the evil sheriff. This is a darkly captivating tale which captures your attention from the very first page.

Despite the heavy feeling this gives off, there's a lightheartedness and humor running throughout which gives it such a nice balance. I also felt that the way Makaryk approached the story was unlike any I'd seen before. He made it seem more real by showing you perspectives from everyone from noblemen and women to the common people. His take on these popular characters just breathed new life into this story. I particularly loved how independent and strong Marion was in this take.

This is a story filled to the brim with action, court politics, betrayals and blurring the lines between right and wrong. There are so many twists and turns, and despite its denseness at times, it's a fascinating historical fiction read.
