Nottingham is a brilliant deconstruction of the classic tale of Robin Hood; Nathan Makaryk removes a lot of the folkloric elements (e.g. knightly chivalry) associated with the original legend and focuses instead on the political climate and historical events that allowed for such acts of rebellion to occur. His gritty realism is a welcome departure from the typically fanciful depictions of Robin Hood's Medieval England. Additionally, the author introduces new female characters to the story and empowers them in a way that feels genuine to the time period. In many ways, Makeryk’s treatment of characters like Lady Marion/Maid Marian reminds me of what Marion Zimmer Bradley did for the women of Arthurian legend. Overall, Makaryk does a fantastic job of reinterpreting a familiar story for a modern audience.
