I really enjoyed Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong. I have found myself not connecting as much with young adult fantasy as much, but this story was compelling and not at all cheesy. I liked all of the main characters. Their powers were fun and their personalities and motivations were well developed and unique. I actually thought the love triangles were very fun. They weren't the focus of the book which was a good choice, but they added a little bit of intrigue to the plot. In terms of the main story arc, I think it was interesting and differentiated itself from all of the other "girls unlock their power" type of books. I would be willing to read the next book and in fact, I looked to see if it was out as soon as I finished. The world building is very good. There was no info dumping, but there was plenty of world building included. There are several nations that were unexplored in book one that were fleshed out to be intriguing for subsequent novels. This is one I will be keeping on my shelves.
