First I love the cover!
Second it was a great book, pulled me in. I did feel lost at times though. I would be reading about Mathilde, and then I am reading about Sayer the next page. I had to go back and be sure I didn't miss anything.
The premise of the book is girls having magic, and how it can't be taken only given. The church believes girls stole the magic from the wellspring, and they are out to find the girls and take the magic back and put it back in the wellspring. However, that isn't the case.
The Nightbirds, are these said girls with magic. They were born with it, they didn't take it. The term sire I kept seeing had me thinking they were vampires as well. Yet, that was the term for their father aka maker.
You have 3 girls who are Nightbirds, they kiss an individual and give that person part of their magic. In turn the person gives a secret. The 3 girls, Mathilde, Sayer and Æsa were found out and then on the run. They hide for a bit until the church finds them. Or so they thought it was the church. It was yet there were others searching as well.
A lot of information to absorb, and backgrounds to remember. It was a great read, and left with somewhat of a cliffhanger. So now we wait for book 2.
