It just wasn't for me.

I claimed this one based solely on the hype and the stunning cover. I really thought the prologue was compelling, but something about the language once I got further into the story just wasn't working for me. I ended up DNFing (Did Not Finish) the book pretty early on. I think something about the way the fantastical terminology was used just wasn't working for me. I didn't like the use of "dame" for (what I presumed to be mothers). I just wasn't meshing with the world building or the language. I couldn't get past it. The writing also just didn't strike me as particularly convincing. It felt a little forced. I come across a lot of Young Adult literature that suffers from the same issue. The characters don't actually feel like teens on the page. The language reads like an adult trying to write a teen, and I can never manage to suspend my disbelief in those circumstances.

I'm sure this book will work for other people; it just really didn't for me. I look forward to re-homing it to someone who will hopefully love it.
