I have to admit I'm sort of struggling with this book and haven't completely finished it. I don't have anything negative to say about it, but I feel like some personal reading preferences are slowing me down and keeping me from really getting immersed in this story.

To begin this story has really incredibly world building. There's a whole history and lore as well as new species that you are introduced to right away. And the author does a great job of weaving these new elements into the story without making it feel like you're reading a textbook. I feel like I personally get a little flustered sometimes in being introduced to a new concept of this world (a flower, a deity, a creature, the governing structure) and not really understanding exactly what it is in the context. So in the process of learning the characters and their stories, you're also learning everything around them.

The three main characters have very different personalities and are well thought out. They come from different backgrounds, and similar to what I mentioned before, these different worlds require different terms and locales to learn to better understand the characters. But you do easily become invested in each character and want to see how their story develops.

The only personal struggle I'm having is the length of the chapters. The story flows very smoothly and quickly. It never feels like it's dragging, which I think is helped by rotating through each character's perspective throughout the chapter. But I find myself putting the book down once I've finished a chapter because I'm not sure I can commit the time to completely finish the next chapter (and I'm the sort of reader that can't pause in the middle of a chapter).

Overall, it's a fascinating story with interesting characters. The author paints a gorgeous picture. And I fully intended to finish this book. Just some of my personal reading habits and preferences mean I'm reading this at a slower pace than I expected.
