I'd say this is a pretty standard YA fantasy in terms of plot. It's pretty easy to follow all the different moving pieces, even though we're mainly following three different characters for most of the book. I like the snippets at the beginning of each chapter that give a little insight to side characters or history that give more context to the current set of events.
The main characters are distinct and easy to root for even when they make frustrating choices.
One of the themes in this book that stuck out to me was the religious trauma and healing. The way it affected the girls was well thought out, and impacted each in a different way.
I didn't realize going in that this was the first book in a series. Once I saw the "To be continued" while flipping through, I was a bit nervous for how it would end since I don't like cliffhangers. But I think Nightbirds wrapped up really well. I didn't feel the whiplash of a cut off story, and am definitely going to be looking out for book two to see how the overall story resolves!
