Nightbirds are teenage girls from the Great Houses with magic coursing through their veins; they have the unique ability to gift their magic to others with a kiss. Magic—especially the magic of women—is outlawed and the city’s religious sects would see them burned if discovered. But protected by the Great Houses, the Nightbirds are safe well-guarded treasures.
Matilde, Aesa, and Sayer are the three girls of our story, and they discover that there are other girls like them, their magic is more than they were ever told, and they finally see the carefully crafted Nightbird system for what it is: a way to keep them in their place, first as daughters and then as wives. Now they must make a choice—to stay in their gilded cage or to remake the city that put them there in the first place.
The pacing is wonderful in this book, and you're completely sucked into this world. The story flows seamlessly and there's no repetitiveness. The characters are strong and well developed and you want to root for them. The lack of romance (maybe a little crush or perhaps a light kiss...)is an added bonus - I'm not big on romance and this read didn't need any so I'm thrilled we didn't have to suffer through any forced scenes. A great read!
