I initially started out very excited about this book. The concept behind the story and the alluring cover really drew me in and made me excited to see how everything would unfold. Unfortunately, my expectations fell short. If you’re looking for another epic “chosen ones” tale, this is very much a classic example. However, I found myself disappointed the narrative chose to lean into these tropes versus the unique aspects it already had going for it. It has a unique fantasy world which definitely shined throughout the story. However, such aspects eventually were dimmed as other aspects took centerfold. Furthermore, I personally felt it eventually became bogged down by the number of characters it focused on. The focus jumped quickly between them, but their individual voices offered little distinction. I found myself turning back pages frequently just to remember which character a chapter focused on.

All in all, this book was an enjoyable read, but not a personal favorite for me.
