This was a dazzling fantasy novel of sisterhood, secrets, and magic. In a world where magic is against the law, the rich will still find a way to gain what is forbidden. For a price, you may kiss a Nightbird and she can give you her power. This story was lush and beautiful. I loved each of the girls and their complex network of family, friends, found family, and enemies. They are tied to one another by their powers and their circumstances, yet friendship blooms as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy story and plan on picking up the next in the series once it releases. There were themes of religion as the "church" is the one outlawing the use of magic, yet an underground world uncovers things that aren't as rare as one may believe. This story had elements that reminded me of Shadow and Bone (Grisha), Serpent and Dove (witches and chasseurs), and the Red Queen (various forms of elemental magic).
