I don't always love books about magic. I find learning the rules of how magic works in the world to be a little tedious. But I like how there appears to be a historical element to this book. I also can't say that I love present tense in books (entirely a personal pet peeve and nothing against any writer). But the beginning of this book was easy to read and I found myself getting wrapped up in the story pretty quickly. I could see myself reading this book to switch things up from my usual, predictable reads.
