Well written, but the premise is ridiculous

So, the main character appears to be on the verge of cracking under the pressure of perfectionism, competive sports, and commitment issues. It seems well written and has decent dialogue and flow. But, I struggle to understand why someone with commitment issues so bad that they reliablely dump whoever they’re dating 2 months in due to said fear of commitment would continue to date new people. Even after dating her best friend, dumping him, and wrecking their friendship. It just doesn’t make any sense. If you’re afraid of relationships, we keep getting into them? Maybe she thought the best friend would be an exception, but when he turned out not to be, why would she continue to get into new relationships? It seems selfish. It’s well written and I sympathize with the protagonist suffocating under too much pressure (internal and external). But, it’s hard to imagine even a well written book being able to escape the selfishness of the protagonist in the beginning. Not impossible, but it would be quite a feat to make her end up mature and unselfish in my eyes by the end of the book. If I ignore this aspect of the premise, I’d say it looks like a good friends-to-exes-to-lovers romance.
