Ummm, where to start… The cover is great! It’s pretty. It’s pink. I like it. As for the actually story, I’m not sure if this book is for me. I suspect our FMC, Kaylee, is written to be an “unlikeable heroine,” and I’m guessing she gets an amazing redemption arc through the book that leads readers to fall in love with her and empathize with
her actions at the beginning of the book. But dang. She’s kind of a mess in the first 40 pages. Like, already, so much to unpack! I can definitely see there is some tension between her and her mom and volleyball, how that will be explored I don’t know. Obviously, her relationship with Dean will become central to the story, but in the first look, we barely even see him, and still don’t know what led Kaylee to end their relationship other than she feels trapped in relationships. I’m expecting this has something to do with volleyball and her anxiety and perfectionism. I thought this would be dual POV, but I guess it isn’t, which is a bit disappointing. It’s hard to tell from only 40 pages, but I think this could be a solid YA read if the authors really explore some of Kaylee’s hesitancy towards relationships and mental health. *mental health isn’t mentioned in the book, but K’s actions read as anxiety to me.
