Librarian: There's a part of me that really wants to add this to the order list. After all we have a lot of British staff members, and many of them would probably enjoy it. On the other hand, we just don't need that many adult books. We're a school library. So as a librarian, I have to say that I would order this if we were a library that catered primarily to adults. In that situation this book provides a tense well-written mystery centered around an already established character. For my purposes, it fails to provide what's needed.
Reader: Confession time: I'd never actually read one of LaPlante's Tennyson novels before I read this one. I mean I knew the character. I've seen Prime Suspect, both the original and that awful US remake, and the short lived prequel series. It wasn't like I had no idea what I was going into. I just never read the books.
From now on though, it looks like that's changing. Reading this book provided me with a sense of enjoyment that I wasn't expecting. I enjoyed the mystery and found the tension good, if slightly predictable. Plus I felt like Tennyson felt like Tennyson, which is not actually that easy of a task when working with a preexisting character. All in all I enjoyed the book and would definitely read LaPlante again.
