Didn't Grab My Interest

This is a police procedural crime novel set in the 1970s, and so the investigation is interesting largely because it's so dated. The story takes us back to a time before DNA and other forensics that we now rely on.

For me, the writing is just okay. I wasn't captivated by the excerpt. It all felt a little stiff, somehow lacking emotion, like the difference between someone whose smile lights up her face and someone who is only working her smile muscles. Still, the story holds potential, and is likely one that builds intensity as it goes along.

What I really didn't like is the Glossary at the start, which is full of acronyms and their meanings. This isn't nonfiction. If an author is using acronyms a reader might not be familiar with, it's simple to add an explanation along with the first use, and then trust the reader to remember. Referring to a glossary as I read a novel, particularly an ebook, isn't practical.
