She's got moxie
Mrs Plansky is a widow retiree in Florida. She is very well off with something like 3.8 million dollars in her checking, savings and investment accounts. You would think she just has rich people's problems, but you'd be wrong. She has fallen for the "Grandparents scam" where someone calls her pretending to be a grandchild who needs money tight away. Just give out your bank account number and password and the child will transfer the needed amount. And don't you just know, like so many of us,she had all her accounts linked and using the same password. The scammers got the entire 3.8 million.
Mrs Plansky is not going to take this loss lying down. If the authorities can't or won't help her, and it looks like they are only going to take a report. she'll get her money back herself. Once she finds that the scammers are in Romania, she is off with an open-ended return ticket and not enough warm clothes for a Romanian winter.
There are a number of coincidences once she gets to Romania, like the first non-embassy people she interacts with are part of the scamming ring. But it's winter and Mrs Plansky is 70, so I will let that pass. Sometimes life happens like that. On top of getting her money back, she rescues the two boys that were part of the scammer ring and takes them back to the United States with her.
I thought the story was charming. I don't know what I'd do if I were to be scammed out of what little money I have, but I would hope I could be as active as Mrs Plansky.
I won the copy of the book I read for this review from the publisher in a Goodreads contest.
