I was immediately pulled into the intense circumstances surrounding young Galán, his family, and the other men and women fleeing Cuba under darkness aboard a makeshift raft. The great sense of urgency and dread kept me riveted, and made me feel that I was right in the middle of the action; feeling desperate, not knowing if the passage would be successful.

When the story introduced Lieutenant Pat McAllister and his Coast Guard crew initiating an interdiction to halt a drug smuggling band, we learn not only about the intensity of initiating a bust, but that McAllister is dealing with heavy pressing concerns with his brother Danny.

It is not only the riveting action that made me want to read more of Mona Passage, but the deeply personal relationships that give heart to this story.

The cover art of Mona Passage is effective in creating the mood of the story. The dark tones and the silhouette of a boat full of people made me want to learn the stories of those traveling toward their destiny.
