More interested in a Cuban perspective

The synopsis of Mona Passage reminds me of American Dirt, and not in a good way. I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with Cuba and experiences of those living there to be able to judge whether author Thomas Bardenwerper portrays them realistically, or stereotypically and through an American lens. I'm much more interested in reading this sort of a fiction from someone who lived a similar experience. (I understand the author served in the Coast Guard, but that really just makes me concerned this book'll be a "white savior" narrative.)
