A beautiful story of love, religion, and race in the 1960s in Alabama. Isaac, a black man, goes missing, and his friend Pete, a white boy, and his grandfather - Isaac's boss in the cotton field -, won’t stop looking for answers on what happened to Isaac. In the middle of all this, there’s also love, religion, and a nice glimpse of how life in the racially and socially divided South might have taken place. A lovely debut novel by Valerie Fraser Luesse. It’s not my preferred style, but this is so nicely written that you will actually be touched with the story and the writing style. The story unfolds from multiple points of view, but, in the end, be it poor or rich, black or white, everyone just want to get answers so they can move on with their lives.
