The book opens with the death of Pete's father. Issac, one of his father's friends, steps in to help him deal with his grief. Very quickly, Isaac goes missing and Pete begins a search for him. The story then shifts to the relationship between Pete and Dovey, a girl he meets while searching for Isaac. Their story is very sweet, but it did become a bit tedious as both of them are portrayed as perfect. In the meantime, Pete's grandfather, Daddy Ballard, is pursuing the investigation of Isaac's disappearance. When the truth was discovered, I felt let down that there was such a simple explanation. The story reminded me of the Mitford series with its slow-moving plot and the Southern characters. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but this was not the book for me.
